Excited to be shortlisted for the ISM Prize for Collaboration with Alex South. Our Rough Breathing collaboration was developed through a CCA/AC Projects Residency, after which were invited to perform at Tectonics Festival, Glasgow in 2019.
The Award event is on 14th April 2020 at the V&A in Dundee.
Old Vic 12 2016 Shortlist
Very excited to have been selected for the shortlist of the Old Vic 12 2016 competition.

Sonic Bothy was one of several Glasgow Life/City Council partnered projects submitted to the National Music Council Awards, and was very excited to receive the Paritor Award for New Music in Education. Read more about the Paritor Award and other winners at the National Music Council website.

Delighted to be awarded a Creative Scotland Artists’ Bursary to undertake some preliminary research and development for new work initially inspired by Elias Canetti’s book Crowds and Power.
Theology was nominated for a CATS Award 2013-14 in the Best Music and Sound Category
The show is in two parts: Part 1, Theology is a Glaswegian-dialect version of the Catholic Order of Mass, with composition by Oliver Searle, performed with a local male choir brought together for the production; and Part 2 A Govan of the Mind is a non-narrative epic poem celebrating the beauty of our everyday language.

Post Industrial Broadcast #1 (9’39) portrays a fictional place or state in a process of transformation. The piece draws from a range of source materials including hydrophone and contact microphone recordings, a radio, the human voice, two-way radios, and an oil radiator and synthesized sounds. Compositionally, the piece unfolds in a wave-like structure. Subtle sounds of water emerge and recede giving a sense of constant flow, while sheets of sound – long, loosely articulated sound gestures – are agitated and interrupted by unpredictable micro-collisions and interference. A sense of forbidding is subtly teased apart by hints of human presence and moments of iridescence.

Some exciting news arrived – I won the IAWM Pauline Oliveros Prize for electroacoustic media for my studio composition Post-Industrial Broadcast #1.

Songs for a Stranger is a collection or cycle of five electroacoustic works that draws metaphorical inspiration from the many senses of the word ‘stranger’.
Everyone feels like a stranger sometimes – when travelling somewhere new; returning home; confronting solitude. Some feel estranged in close intimacy; others find connection through anonymity.

……And down at the rough end of the basement, in a bare tunnel of a room, there’s composer Nichola Scrutton’s Songs For A Stranger, a 25-minute piece that moves beyond the limits of language into five segments of abstract electronic sound, accompanied by the increasingly fierce and brilliant vocal improvisations of Scrutton and her performing partner, Celine Hanni. There’s a central moment of meditation – titled Solitude – that recalls the deep resonances of Tibetan chant; then a final, shattering visit to what sounds like a dying rainforest, as a fierce richness of animal sound gives way to crackling cataclysm, and the soft, low sigh of a final breath….
