Nichola Scrutton
Nichola Scrutton is an award-winning electroacoustic composer, vocalist, and interdisciplinary artist who explores the fluid, ephemeral spaces between real and re-imagined sound worlds. Through a multi-faceted sound-art practice, she draws deeply from psychology, memory-dreams and somatic experience, observation, and environment. She dynamically weaves together field recordings, sculpted vocal sound, and electronics with live improvisation, performance, and visual media to create open, multi-sensory experiences.
Throughout her career, Nichola has produced a substantial body of work and managed large-scale projects with significant funding awards. She has extensive experience leading interdisciplinary and participatory collaborations, and her compositions have been broadcast internationally.
Background
Nichola holds a BMus (First Class Honours), an MMus in Composition, and was awarded a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition from the University of Glasgow in 2009 (supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council). She then worked in the Music department for two years before changing to a full-time freelance practice.
In collaborative and participatory work, Nichola’s practice is anchored in a trauma-informed, person-centred framework. Her training includes a COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills (University of Strathclyde), Seasonal Yoga Teacher Training (200 & 300 hr), Mental Health First Aid (MHFAider), and advanced safeguarding. Nichola integrates deep reflection and ongoing CPD to support an inclusive environment across all projects.
