About Nichola
Nichola Scrutton is an award-winning electroacoustic composer, vocalist, and interdisciplinary artist who explores the fluid, ephemeral spaces between real and re-imagined sound worlds. Through a multi-faceted sound-art practice, she draws deeply from psychology, memory-dreams, observation, and environment. She dynamically weaves together field recordings, sonorous, sculpted voice sound, and electronics with live improvisation, performance, and visual media to create open, multi-sensory experiences.
Throughout her career, Nichola has produced a substantial body of work, managed large-scale projects with significant funding awards, and developed extensive experience working in collaborative, participatory, and inclusive projects. Based in Glasgow, her work is broadcast internationally, with a current focus on creative process and sensory exploration through self-directed work and diverse collaborations.
Nichola holds a BMus (First Class Honours), an MMus in Composition, and was awarded a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition from the University of Glasgow in 2009 (supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council). She then worked in the Music department for two years before changing to a full-time freelance practice.
Nichola’s practice is rooted in a trauma-informed, person-centred approach that emphasises creative health, safety, and well-being. Her formal training includes a COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills from the University of Strathclyde, Seasonal Yoga Teacher Training (200 & 300 hr), Mental Health First Aid (MHFAider), and advanced safeguarding. She continuously integrates deep reflection and ongoing CPD to ensure a supportive, inclusive environment.
